Yellowstone National Park Day 1

July 9, 2012

Today was our 18th anniversary and what a fabulous way to spend the day! We woke up to a 36 degree morning at our campsite at Grant Village. We were freezing, but our sleeping bags did keep us warm. We had decided that today was the day to visit Old Faithful because it was relatively close and we've been driving quite a bit lately!

When we got to Old Faithful we kind of lucked out because it had been almost an hour since the last eruption so we knew it would erupt again soon. On average it erupts every 92 minutes. We found good spots and shortly thereafter water started to burble up, then it was spurting high in the air as we oohed and ahhhed and took a bunch of pictures. After the eruption we watched a short 13 minute movie about the geysers, got a trail map and planned out our afternoon. We went back to the car to pack a lunch and witnessed an unfortunate accident! We had parked next to a pickup truck that was towing an enormous trailer and when he tried to pull out, the trailer went right into the side of the truck parked on the other side. Nick was standing outside of our car on the side of the trailer so I started screaming for him to get in the car fearing that the guy would over compensate and hit us. Joe was in the gift shop buying socks for Brady so I abandoned my sandwich making, jumped in the car and drove off as fast as I could to find a new spot as far away from that disaster as possible before we became the next casualty! We all felt so badly for the people whose vacation was just ruined as a result of some fool parking in a spot he was never going to get out of.

So now we were ready to hike out and see the geysers. There are warning signs everywhere about the fragility of the ground, reminding everyone that people have died going off of the path. In parts the ground is very thin with scalding hot water just below the surface, so I kept a tight grip on Brady's hand and we all proceeded carefully! The geysers are really amazing. Everywhere you look something is steaming, bubbling up or shooting water into the air. I have never seen anything like it! The total hike was about 3 miles and we all really enjoyed it. After the hike we got ice cream, then headed back to camp for showers and dinner. Great day!
